My name is Brian Johns. I've been driving in Idaho since 1980, teaching Driver Education in Idaho since 1995, wrote the country's first true online Driver Education course (for IDLA) in 2005, and created this course in 2018 which is state approved for all Idaho private driving schools and parents wishing to do the driving lessons themselves in the parent-led program.
I am the former Director of Idaho Driver Education and Idaho Traffic Safety Commissioner. My mission is to make better/safer drivers on our roads and I'm glad you're here!
This course can be started at any time, worked on at any time, and finished at any time. It is packed full of valuable content about driving, owning, and maintaining a vehicle, uses the state curriculum that I created, includes my insight from teaching thousands of new drivers for over 30 years, and focuses on national and Idaho-specific traffic laws.
There is a 24 hour "pause" between each of the 7 units to slow students down just enough to engage in the material and digest what they are learning.
The course looks and works like a "real" online class that many students are familiar with - and includes assignments, readings, video lessons, virtual driving lessons, quizzes, and more. It is a complete "driver education" - not just a slideshow.
My job is to prepare your child to be ready to get behind the wheel of a vehicle, knowing the procedures and laws, so that you can show and talk them through driving in your part of Idaho.
If you are interested in going this direction instead of having a private driving school or public program do the driving lessons, please buy a driver's training instruction permit and CONTACT ME!
After I receive your student's information and the fee I will send you the course information, link, and parent resources you will need.
Once the first two units of the class are completed and you receive the actual permit in the mail from the DMV you will begin the 6 hours of driving lessons that teach the SKILLS reflected in the online class and on the driving log. The student must also observe other adult drivers for at least 6 hours and once the class and those 12 hours of driving log entries are completed, you will return to the DMV so they can see the logs and completion certificate I will send you - and they will mark that as the start of the 6 month supervised driving period. The supervised driving period must last a minimum of 6 months and include at least 50 hours of driving - with at least 10 of those being during hours of darkness.
You then schedule a skills test with a local skills tester, with the student driving your car, and then return to the DMV for a third time (!) with the results of the skills test to have the student take the written test - and if passed - get their driver's license.
