Parent-Taught Driver Ed
As of July 1, 2024 Idaho started allowing parents to teach their own children to drive if they (and their child) live in a rural town of 25,000 or less or if no public driver education program is available in their town.
If you qualify and are interested, please buy a learner's permit and sign up for the IDLA online driver education course.
HOWEVER, I highly recommend you consider hiring a trained professional driving instructor to provide the first 6 hours of driving lessons.

- Instructors have hundreds, even thousands of hours of experience providing driving lessons.
- Instructors are not emotionally connected to your child, giving them the ability to stay focused and unemotional during stressful traffic situations. We are trained to remain calm and speak clearly and unemotionally, even when there are only seconds before the correct decision must be made.
- Instructors have their own brake on their side of the vehicle, allowing them the ability to avoid dangerous, even fatal situations while a new driver is learning and making mistakes.
- After the six hours of driving lessons are completed, the parent or guardian gets the permit and still provides their own influence and instruction during the required 50 hours of supervised driving.
- For less than the cost of a used gaming console, you can hire a private driving school to introduce a lifetime of proven, safe driving skills and habits.
- Instructors have a handful of skills they have their drivers practice that many adults have never heard of: 15 mph corners, 5 second signaling, active eyes, how often to check mirrors, the circle of safety, covering the brake, trail braking, coasting corners, S.M.O.G., shuffle steering vs. hand over hand steering, using reference points for vehicle positioning, parking on hills, zipper merging, off-road recovery techniques, and so much more!
- Instructors know and understand all traffic laws - and make them part of their driving lessons.
- Instructors match specific driving skills to local driving routes for each lesson.
- Hiring a private driving school also qualifies a student to take this online course: Idaho Online Driver Education!
